Writing a Great CV for the Hospitality Industry

We sat down and got their feedback and advice on how to write an amazing CV for the hospitality sector that will always impress!
The recruitment team have whittled down everything they consider when looking at a CV to the below three questions. If they can’t answer all three questions having looked at your CV, then your application won’t go much further.
- Have you worked in the hospitality sector before?
- How much experience do you have in hospitality?
- What roles within the hospitality sector have you held?

Essential Ingredients for Writing a Great CV
Your CV should include:
- Up to date contact information
- Personal statement or profile
- Work experience – including relevant skills and achievements
- Education & Qualifications
Without all of the essential ingredients, a CV will not get through the first stage of the recruitment process. All of these need to be there for us to even begin the process, and we don’t have the time to chase people down for basic information.Laura Kerr – Recruitment
Your CV should not include:
- Height or weight
- Marital status
- Sexual orientation
- Bank account details
- PPS Number
- Referee details
Writing the Body
It’s not original advice, but it is good advice: you should tailor your CV to each and every job you apply for. Because, we hire staff exclusively for the hospitality sector , your hospitality experience should shine through in your CV. Some helpful advice on what you can include can be found here.
This needs to be clearly visible at the top of your CV.
“Ensure your contact information is correct! We get loads of applications where there is an error with a phone number or email address. As a result we can’t get in touch, and you lose out because of a silly mistake, when the rest of your CV might be amazing!”Laura Kerr – Recruitment
This may be short, but it is important. Above all, a personal statement gives you the chance to sell yourself to potential employers — and you don’t have much time to do that. Include 3-5 lines about yourself at the top of the CV.
Firstly, you should always start with your most recent job when listing your employment history. Most importantly, you must include the dates that you worked in each role, e.g. “O’Brien’s – May 2016- October 2019“.

Include anything relevant that you achieved while in a role that helps you to stand out, e.g. “Was responsible for in-house promotion that doubled sales on cocktails”, or “Re-organised inventory to allow for improved productivity”. These details allow us to learn about you, and as a result, we can ask better and more interesting questions at interview stage.”Denise O’Brien – Recruitment
The details you should list depend entirely on where you are at in your professional and academic career, and need only include your most recent academic qualification, e.g. “Leaving Certificate, 2014” or “Bachelor of Arts 2.1 hons, 2016”
Hobbies and Interests
These are not always necessary, though they give an insight into your personality and make you stand out from the crowd. In other words, this is the time to show off your achievements or any voluntary work you may have done.

“Check your spelling! A CV full of spelling and grammatical mistakes will not get you far, even though you may have the best experience out of all the candidates. Have a friend or family member look through it to spot any glaring errors.”Laura Kerr – Recruitment
